Peak

Introduction

The first time I played PEAK I thought I would be playing a fairly straightforward climbing game. It didn’t take long for me to realize that reaching the summit was half the task, because keeping the entire team alive on the way up can quickly turn your climb into true madness. That’s what makes PEAK great.

You climb, search for resources, watch your stamina, support your mates, and constantly evaluate whether or not the next bit of climbing is worth the risk.

A single mistake can turn your entire day upside down in an instant.

What Makes PEAK Great

This is a cooperative climbing and survival game from Landfall and Aggro Crab. The core concept is simple: you and your fellow explorers end up on an unknown island, and your only real options are to climb the mountain in the middle. You can do this yourself or bring friends along.

The simplicity is all an illusion.

Thanks to rotating maps, changing hazards, new resources, and random differences in environment configurations, no single mountain route is guaranteed to solve each expedition. Your attention is pushed to observe your environment and react accordingly based on what resources you have at hand in the present moment. With a rotating selection of biomes that include a lot of environmental threats, the recent addition of GLOOM and THE CITADEL (an additional biome) as variant environments, and the CALDERA and THE KILN climbing routes, the game has even more variety in what you might encounter on a climbing run.

And honestly, the funniest moments I experienced came from when a perfectly valid plan was suddenly no longer valid.

How the Climbing Gameplay Works

You, your friends, climbing, stamina, supplies, cooperation, and risk management. Your climber will need to go up some very tough slopes, survive environmental hazards, and push themselves up to the limits of their endurance.

Stamina has a big role in what makes this game tick, because no matter how well you know the route, a good expedition can’t involve tiring yourself out at just the wrong time.

When it comes to foods and other resources, there’s a bunch of weird foods that might help you survive your expedition, but they won’t all necessarily inspire confidence when you’re eating them. Injuries will also affect what you’re physically able to do, making later sections even more difficult if you’ve failed to take proper care of yourself. And then there’s the teamwork aspect. Up to four players can climb together, and proximity voice chat makes talking with your friends just as much of the game as everything else listed here.

Someone might need support, someone else might spot a safer route, everyone might suddenly realize that somebody else’s plan was a bad idea, and you all might just have to quit for the moment because you’ve climbed past the point of what is reasonable.

The mountain doesn’t care. You have to adapt.

Why PEAK Works So Well

I think the biggest strength of PEAK is how easy it is to create stories. You don’t need a complex story in your head to remember an expedition: you found a route, and you climbed it quickly. You ran out of stamina, or someone else ran out of stamina, halfway up a challenge, reached the campfire with everyone having only a sliver of food or water left in the inventory.

Those are the experiences you remember.

I think PEAK is helped by the straightforward controls and quite clear aims: whatever you’re trying to do, you always know what that looks like, but the process of reaching that goal is subject to enough change that each attempt isn’t boring. A daily rotation of maps adds to this by not letting the expedition just be memorized forever, and the new biome variants help as well by giving the veteran climber some additional challenge rooms to learn. Badges and cosmetics will also help extend the amount of time you might still be interested: you’re not just climbing because the mountain is there, you have long-term goals, and players who get better can get to the point where they’re more comfortable with all the game’s hazards, movement, and equipment. The final big content update brought GLOOM and THE CITADEL as new variation environments, and that update has been described as the game’s last big one, with ongoing bug fixing and maintenance continuing as needed.

Final Words

Honestly, PEAK is one of those games where I think the core idea sounds too simple until I play it myself.

Climb the mountain, reach the top, done. And then I think, what do you have to manage to do that? You need to watch your environment, you need to make sure you don’t injure yourself, you need to look after the climbing tools, and you need to make sure you don’t waste your stamina.

If you’re playing with friends, the decision to follow that plan or not is just that little bit more fun because other members of your team might have a different take on whether or not the next leg of the climb is reasonable. Sometimes the careful approach is right, sometimes the careful approach is wrong. With the rotating maps, the design team worked in the new biome variants, there’s enough randomness in the system that you can learn a new map, try it with different directions, and then go back to the older ones to see how much you’ve improved.

I think PEAK is at its peak when nobody’s climbing the mountain too seriously; you can plan every move, listen to your friends’ advice, and yet climb up to someone hanging from a branch with somebody else arguing that you caused the death trap.

Sometimes that randomness is the point. If you like PC cooperative games that involve climbing, survival mechanics, exploring environments, working with friends, and waiting for something to happen just because of the game’s design, PEAK will have plenty of memories to create. And that climb to the top still might not be the funniest part.
